Sitemap Finder & Checker

The tool uses a multi-step discovery process: it first reads the site's robots.txt file for any Sitemap: directives, then probes common sitemap paths like /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, /news-sitemap.xml, and others. If a sitemap index is found, it recursively fetches all child sitemaps up to two levels deep.

The validator flags a wide range of issues including malformed or unparseable XML, missing <urlset> or <sitemapindex> root elements, HTTP error status codes (404, 500, etc.), empty sitemaps, URL sets exceeding the 50,000-URL limit, incorrect content types, and sitemaps where more than 50% of entries are missing lastmod dates.

A Sitemap Index (rooted with <sitemapindex>) is a master file that points to other individual sitemap files — it contains no URLs directly. A URL Set (rooted with <urlset>) is an individual sitemap file that contains the actual page URLs submitted to search engines. Large websites often use a sitemap index to organize hundreds of sitemap files.

Yes — you can paste a full sitemap URL directly (e.g. https://example.com/sitemap.xml) and the tool will fetch and analyze that specific file, recursing into child sitemaps if it's a sitemap index, without running the full domain discovery process.

'Unreachable' means the tool timed out or encountered a network error when trying to fetch that sitemap URL — the file may be temporarily down or blocking automated requests. 'Invalid XML' means the file was fetched successfully but its content could not be parsed as valid XML, which will prevent search engines from reading it correctly and should be fixed immediately.
